Retinol is derived from vitamin A and is most commonly used as an anti-ageing ingredient. It has been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation and acne as well as smooth skin texture.
How does it work?
Retinol promotes skin cell turnover, which forces the damaged surface cells to slough off, allowing the new healthy cells to emerge while simultaneously stimulating the production of collagen to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Zo Obagi Radical Night Repair contains 1% retinol—a natural form of Vitamin A—it replaces what the skin has lost over time which is the ability to stimulate the retinoid-receptor found on every cell.
Over time sunlight and the ageing process damage collagen fibers and elastin (a protein in the skin that maintains the strength and firmness of the skin). Retinol works to protect your skin from these harmful free radicals, repairing damaged cells and building collagen.
Although it is important to note, that the benefits of retinol can only occur after prolonged regular use as it is (unfortunately) not an overnight sensation.
How should it be used?
It is important to keep in mind that during the first few weeks of use most skin types will suffer from some varying form of irritation. Symptoms include redness, dryness, peeling and an overall tight feeling, while your skin gets use to this ingredient. This is when you know that the retinol is working for you.
It is recommended to use a 1% retinol-focused product (such as Zo Obagi Radical Night Repair or Brightenex), just once a week to start, and then very gradually build up to daily usage. Additionally, make sure to include this 1% retinol along with a full Zo Obagi skin care regimen including a 0.5% Zo Obagi retinol Day Cream (Daily Power Defense) and minimum 30spf oil free product such as the ZO oclipse sunscreen & primer for the best overall results and improvement in your skin and also to protect the skin while new skin is coming to the top of the surface.
Long-term regular use of retinol will provide the skin with the vital nutrients it needs to be healthier and less reactive to the environment. Products with high concentrations of retinol will cause peeling, and make your skin more vulnerable to UV rays, so be sure to wear a full spectrum sun protection as mentioned above!
