Shrink & Minimize Large Pores
The appearance of enlarged pores is a common issue for many of our patients at SkinRhümMD. Pores are essential to your skin’s health, by providing oil to keep skin soft and hydrated. However, pores can become more prominent over time, making them appear larger than they really are. A general understanding of the causes and subsequent prevention and treatments can go a long way to shrink large pores and significantly reduce their prominence.
Causes of Large Pores
There are two main factors that contribute to large pores: excess oil, and decreased skin elasticity due to age, sun damage and decreased collagen production. People who have skin that is naturally thick and oily tend to have larger pores.
Generally, the sebaceous glands underneath the skin produce sebum (oils) which lubricate the skin through the pores. When the pore becomes clogged with dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria, oil within the pore begins to accumulate, causing the pore’s diameter to expand.
Blackheads are also a big contributor to large pores, when a clogged pore is oxidized (exposed to air), blackheads will form.
Prevention & Treatment of Large Pores
The appearance of large pores can be greatly reduced by cleansing the pores of debris, excess oil, and bacteria. This can be achieved using a medical grade skin care regimen at home under the direction of a physician, including an oil-reduction specific facial wash (such as Zo Obagi Oilacleanse), 2% Salicylic Acid wipes (Zo Obagi Cebetrol), 0.5% and 1.0% medical retinol products (such as Zo Obagi Radical Night Repair) as well as a 10% vitamin C serum daily (Zo Obagi C-Bright). These antioxidants help increase collagen and elastin production while simultaneously loosening dirt and oil from the pores.
Exfoliation can also minimize the appearance of large pores. This can be accomplished using Zo Obagi Exfoliating Polish facial scrub daily and/or in-office medical microdermabrasion Silkpeel dermalinfusion treatments. These treatments buff and exfoliate while simultaneously infusing Salicylic Acid serums into the deep layers of the skin, cleansing the skin of impurities, oils and bacteria, leaving the skin texture smooth, pores reduced and the skin clean, radiant and refreshed.
More aggressive treatments would include laser resurfacing and skin tightening lasers to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin.
